Is there any drastic difference in modern day oil filters? Take Fram, for example. They have the regular filters, tough guard, extended guard, and high mileage. Other than a few dollars price difference, is there anything that is worth paying for the difference in the higher up ones, or is it just a marketing gimmick? I was trying to choose a filter today (went with the regular fram filter, since its what I have always used) but I wasn't sure if there would be a realistic advantage if I would have purchased, say, the high mileage filter.

I have NO idea what a filter could do for a high mileage engine....   Some brands will have a filter media that will capture smaller particles in the better grade. I've never researched Fram but a google to their website may shed some light on why they have that many different filters.

I honestly dont think theres much of a differance. i just buy the Fram extra guard for 3 buck at walmart, and put it in the car.

Good question! you see on furnace filters that show a number that correlates to the size of the particles it traps but you don't see a similar rating for oil filters.

I would say the extra money may buy you better construction or maybe more surface area.

here is a link with some good info.

My understanding is Wix filters are the best.  They make the NAPA filters, so I've gone with the NAPA racing filters.  But really, if you are changing your oil on regular intervals, You probably aren't going to go wrong with whatever you buy.

There was talk a while back about some having cardboard ends that failed over time resulting in oil bypassing the filter all together. Don't know if it's still that way, but I usually get NAPA, WIX or Carquest filters.

Well according to that website, FRAM is a brand you want to stay away from. Now I am kinda regretting that Fram Extra Guard oil filter I put on when I changed my oil this morning...I usually change my oil every 2500-3000 miles though...so next time I change it, maybe Ill try something new. Lots of good information on that website though, although I think it is just an opinionated, self-experimented source.
